Objective: Finish Name Cards & Start Interview Assignment
Product: How do you feel about the interview character you've come up with?

Bell Work: Who is one of your favorite celebrities? Explain why.

Class Activities
For the first ten to fifteen minutes of class, students will complete their name cards that they started to make the day before. Once the students finish, they will turn their card into Mr. Eastland.

One of the last getting to know you activities that we will be doing in class is the Character Interview. Mr. Eastland will divide the class into groups of two. If there is an odd numbered class, there will be one group of three. Each student will choose a celebrity, accent, personality, or fictional character to portray for this assignment. They can be anyone they want to be as long as they are not themselves.

Each student will interview their partner, but not in the same way that we did at the beginning of the year. At the beginning of the year, we were getting to know someone through their likes, dislikes, and other facts. This should be more like a television interview, where the questions lead to more story like answers.

The interviewer is going to portray the character that the student has decided on. The interviewee is the student being himself/herself. The interviewer will need to come up with a opening and closing to their interview. For example:
"Good evening, everyone! Thank you for watching the Late Night with Mr. Eastland! We are here tonight with Christopher Eastland. Everybody give him a round of applause!"
and
"That's all the time we have for tonight, but thank you folks for coming out. Christopher is was great meeting, and I hope the best for your future."

Besides these two things being planned out, the questions need to be planned out before the interview as well. Remember, that the questions need to lead to long, story answers not short answers. The opening, closing, and questions need to be written out by the interviewer, but the responses do not need to be written out.

Students will work the rest of the day on this project. Once they have everything figured out, they will rehearse in class. They will have part of tomorrow to rehearse, before they start performing.

Remember! The key to passing this class is to be Positive and Willing to Try. Above all, please have FUN with this assignment! I look forward to seeing all of the performances on Thursday and Friday!

Important!
The Character Interview is a TEST GRADE! Be ready to go in the order Mr. Eastland placed you in during class.

Objective: Social Contracts & Beginning Interviews for Introductions
Product: What did you learn about your partner today?

Bell Work: Why is it important to have good manners?

Class Activities
Mr. Eastland talked to the students more about good manners to reinforce the ideas that he planted the day before. He also reviewed the rules, consequences, and procedures.

The class then created a Social Contract for the class based on the following questions:
1. How do you want to be treated by your fellow classmates?
2. How do you want to be treated by me?
3. How do you think that I want to be treated by you?
4. Is there anything not on the board that you think should be?

Students shared one or two words answers that were written on the board. This continued until all questions were answered and the students could agree on what was written on the board. They then agreed that what they came up with is how they were going to treat their fellow classmates and the teacher for the rest of the school year.

The students were then partnered up and began interviewing each other for an introduction assignment that they would do start the next day. They asked each other questions about favorite things and what they did this summer knowing that they would have to introduce their partner to the class the very next day.

Objective: Who's Your Teacher?
Product: What is something that you learned about Mr. Eastland today?

Bell Work: Tell me about 3-5 things you did this summer. (Complete Sentences)

Class Activities
The day was spent getting to know Mr. Eastland. For any parents that are interested, my full name is Christopher Eastland. I was born in Waco, TX and raised in Whitney, TX. I was raised by my grandmother, Mary Alice Eastland. I graduated from Whitney High School in 2004. I attended Baylor University from 2004-2008. I graduated with a B.F.A. Theatre Performance degree. Two months later, I found myself in Allentown, PA as an intern for the Civic Theatre of Allentown. I stayed there for nine months building sets, answering phone calls, selling tickets, directing the children's show, and occasionally making a coffee run.

I moved to Dallas, TX in the summer of 2009. When I was younger, being an educator was something I was going to do later in life, but after directing the children's show in Allentown, PA, I decided that theatre education is where I needed to be. I talked to a friend of mine, got an interview, and was hired to teach middle school theatre arts in Grand Prairie ISD at Kennedy Middle School for the 2009-2010 school year. I taught at Kennedy for two years and loved every second of it! At the end of this past school year, I was transfered to Reagan Middle School and am enjoying my new home.

Besides being a middle school theatre teacher, I am also a professional director, actor, and designer in Dallas, TX. My nights are spent in rehearsal doing whatever I can to keep up with the times in theatre industry. I like to bring my experiences from the theatre past and present into my classroom to give your child the best theatre education possible. This past summer, I acting in Steve Martin's WASP in the role of Son for Upstart Productions. I also designed the set and costumes for Rite of Passage Theatre Company's production of The Love Song of the Albanian Sous Chef by Rob Askins.

I enjoy reading, writing, camping, running, eating, movies, theatre, music of all kinds, education, nature, and card games. If there is anything else that you would like to know or just talk about, I would be happy to be in contact with you. My email address is christopher.eastland@gpisd.org. You can also reach me at 971.522.7300, ext. 7330.

I am looking forward to this school year. It has started off extremely well! Thank you all for everything that you do. Here's to a great school year! GO KNIGHTS!
